Dave Mirra

Born April 4, 1974 in Chittenango, New York, Dave was a part of Haro Bikes BMX Team by the age of 13. By 1991 Dave was sponsored by Vision Street Wear and GT Bicycles. He would eventually graduate from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. In the early 90s, Mirra’s brother, Tim, moved to Greenville, North Carolina, to attend East Carolina University. Dave moved to Greenville soon after. Fellow professional BMX rider Ryan Nyquist moved in with Tim. Dave and Nyquist became quick friends and would build and ride ramps together. Greenville is now home to over twenty professional BMX riders, giving Greenville the nickname “Protown” in the BMX community

Dave turned professional in 1992. He won a medal at the X Games in every year from 1995 through 2009, except for 2006. He won 24 medals at the X Games which stood as a record until 2013. His 14 gold medals are second-most to Shaun White. Dave retired from BMX racing in 2011. After BMX Dave would compete in other areas such as Rallycross racing and Iron man competitions. By 2007 he decided to start his own bike company MirraCo. Dave was married to his wife Lauren and they had two daughters together.

On February 4th, 2016 in Greenville, NC Dave was found in his truck with an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound. Dave was 41 years old.
